The short answer: We found a few sourced prices. The City of Boston estimates about $3,500 to install a sump pump. Consumer Reports puts battery backup pumps at $100 to $300 or more, plus $100 to $400 for a battery. Alarms start at about $10 (Ann Arbor). We found no independent price for just swapping a pump, so we don't quote one. Get at least three written quotes.
Safety first. Sump pumps run on household power in a wet place. Unplug the pump before you handle it, stay out of standing water that is near outlets, a panel or appliances, and hire a licensed electrician or plumber for wiring and plumbing work. Check local codes and permit rules. This safety note is ours, not from a source.

Common questions

How much does a sump pump cost?

We found one government estimate: the City of Boston lists approximately $3,500 for installing a sump pump (with a useful life of 7 to 10 years) in its flood-retrofit guide. It notes submersible pumps are more expensive than pedestal pumps and that its figures may vary with property conditions, labor rates and materials. We did not find an independent price for the pump alone.

How much does a battery backup sump pump cost?

Consumer Reports (updated March 2025) puts battery-powered backup pumps at $100 to $300 or more, with AGM batteries between $150 and $400 and flooded lead-acid batteries between $100 and $250.

What does a water-powered backup cost?

Consumer Reports gives no price for water-powered units. Ann Arbor says they cost more than a battery backup to install because of the backflow-prevention valve and extra water piping, and they use about 2 gallons of water for each gallon pumped.

Is a high-water alarm worth it?

Ann Arbor says simple alarms can cost as little as $10 and more sophisticated ones a few hundred dollars. An alarm warns you the pit is rising but does not pump water.
