Do I need a backup sump pump?
Not necessarily. Ann Arbor, Michigan says it depends on your situation and that backup systems add expense, maintenance and complexity. Our checker walks through the risk factors it lists.
Can I install a sump pump myself?
Local rules differ. Boston says a sump pump and basin should be installed by a licensed professional and needs a plumbing permit. New Jersey allows homeowners to do the work on their own single-family home with a permit when the pump connects to existing plumbing. Check your local building department.
